A certain piece of equipment in my possession has been causing me a bit of grief in this lovely British time of rain and wind (i.e. the majority of the time), so I thought I’d compose a poem that’s essentially a heavily abridged version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Nevermind’. As you do. It’s a song I became obsessed with after hearing it during the opening titles of True Detective S2 (no, it’s not a great season, but it’s also not as bad as people say it is). Anyway, imma ’bout to chuck some substandard beats your way.

Trailer Trash Talk: Wuthering Heights, Project Hail Mary, Michael

A woman has a bit of a rant about trailers for films that look vaguely disappointing but which she’ll probably go to the cinema to see anyway. ‘Spiritual Vibration’ – The Enduring Appeal of Max Richter’s ‘On the Nature of Daylight’

Director Chloé Zhao announced in an interview with Empire that she’s used Richter’s soulful tune for the emotional denouement in her upcoming adaption of Maggie O’Farrell novel Hamnet. But why is the song so popular on the big (and small) screen, and is it at saturation point with its overuse, or has it become a more universal tool to signal cinematic sadness?
