A Forensic Film Reveal

A fair bit of chicanery went down on the day of May 12th, 2006. A film appeared as the rarest choice in that final section where you can look at the rarest choices after you’ve completed all the entries. But the thing is, this film hasn’t been released yet, nor does it even have a speculative year of release. For all intents and purposes, this film doesn’t exist. Yet apparently it scored 20 points. Rubbish. Hokum. Tomfoolery of the highest order. How do I know all this? I’m a major league Ryan Gosling nerd, that’s why.

Oh, I’m referring to the Guardian Film Reveal puzzle on the Guardian app. Just thought I should clarify.

Oh x2, you should also be prepared for me to be slightly sketchy when discussing certain films because I don’t want my low scoring choices to be aired and then potentially increase the percentage of folks going for that answer. Whacky paranoia of the highest order? For sure. Anyway.

The case? Ryan Gosling. The dude’s starred in 29 feature films at this point. I know that how, you ask? Well, initially from checking Wikipedia, but since then, I’ve memorised all of them. Could probably list them alphabetically. Am I on the spectrum? Perhaps, but the spectrum’s pretty darn wide. The main crime arose in one of the Film Reveal categories, specifically, the category which specified putting in a two-word film. Ok, no problem if you’re the average Film Reveal fan. Just whack a film in there and see what you get. But me? Nah. When your Gosling knowledge is as fine-tuned as your humble narrator’s, you’ve gotta go for the best answer possible. (づ ◕‿◕ )づ

But here’s the fact, bro. Knowing RG films as I do, I also knew that there is no two word Goz film currently in existence that doesn’t include the guy in the starring role. So pretty much impossible to get the perfect 20 score, surely. But I had to check. I had to be sure. In this case, I had to break protocol. Just to clarify, I ain’t proud of this, but I went through the devious method of deleting the app every time a put in an RG two worder, and guess what? Nothing came up Millhouse. First Man? Nah. A measly 16 points. Blue Valentine? Also 16. Did Gangster Squad, Half Nelson, The Notebook get the goods? Nah. Eventually I settled on his critical breakthrough for a respectable 19 points, where he plays a Jewish Nazi (will I be naming it? No. Google it yourself, if you happen to be interested). That seemed to be the rarest answer, considering I’d exhausted all the others. Fun fact, Goz’s Nice Guys co-star Russell Crowe also got his big break playing a Nazi, this time in Romper Stomper. The more you know. Anyway, I thought that was fine and dandy. The chances of a 20 in that category were null and void. What RG films did I go for in the other two categories, you ask? No comment. Gonna keep my cards close to my chest. Sorry not sorry. (*′☉.̫☉)

But then I got to the kicker. That kicker being the rarest guesses section. And you know what? There was a 20 pointer in the RG two-word category. And do you know what it was? Tough Guys. Uh, yeah, that’s right. Tough Guys. That movie exists, right? I know Film Reveal can get a bit devious with letting you pick films that are yet to be released but are being released in the same year that you’re currently living in, but this one? Nah. I hadn’t even heard of it. It didn’t even have a darn poster. This coming from a Gosling stan, I remind you. So I did some research. Some sleuthing, if you will. And yeah, turns out it is a film. Technically. It’s listed on IMDb, which is legit. It’s some kind of crime caper that sees Goz and Will Ferrel (The Nice Guys? The Other Guys? The Fall Guy? The Knife Guys sketch from SNL? Gosling and Ferrel know their guys) trying to leave their murky professions and strike out on their own. All well and good. But the thing is, this film hasn’t been released. There are no promo photos, no release date, no nothing. There’s a 2025 report about it from The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline that’s been repeated in various other outlets, but that‘s it.

Get your priorities straight, Film Reveal. You can’t put films on your game that don’t exist yet. It ain’t right. I call bullshit on that. (Θ︹Θ)ს
