Luca’s latest disappointing effort has been out of the cinema for a decent while now, so it’s very much, uh..after After the Hunt. Plus there’s a film called The Hunt, too. Y’know, the 2012 one. Not the 2020 one. So, on the basis of that fact, let’s have a comparison showdown.
Is the film depressing?
The Hunt: Yes. After the Hunt: Also yes. ( ,,⩌’︿’⩌,,)
Like, really depressing?
The Hunt: Yeah, it’s pretty darn bleak. After the Hunt: Uh, not really REALLY depressing. But quite depressing?
Like, depressing in an effective narrative format?
The Hunt: Yeah, I’d say so. This is Mads Mikkelsen we’re talking about here. The lad knows how to emote with powerful facial expressions (see: Valhalla Rising) After the Hunt: Mmm, not really. The heavy subject matter isn’t addressed in a particularly hard-hitting way. (っ- ‸ –
What is the film’s subject matter, btw?
The Hunt: Ah, funny that you asked. It’s about a primary school teacher who’s wrongly accused of paedophilia. After The Hunt: Focuses on the repercussions of a sexual assault charge, told mostly from the viewpoint of the accuser’s academic supervisor.
Does a dog die?
Come on now, there’s a website for that. A widely recognised website at this point. (•̀⤙•́ )
Nonetheless, does a dog die?
The Hunt: Yep. After the Hunt: Nope, no dog’s even involved in the proceedings. Boo. (ㆆ_ㆆ)
Is there lots of dialogue and shouting?
The Hunt: Nope, this is a pretty quiet, pared down kinda joint After the Hunt: This is definitely more dialogue heavy, but this doesn’t exactly go in its favour. But props to Andrew Garfield for his shouting efforts. Dude’s genuinely one of the best shouters in the film scene (see: Never Let Me Go, The Social Network) (੭˙Ⱉ˙)੭
Does an actual hunt take place?
The Hunt: I mean, not a physical hunt, since the target’s chosen straight away After the Hunt: Likewise.
So why did these films choose these titles, then?
I don’t know, I guess they wanted to get that witch hunt, trial vibe going. Why are you asking me, anyway? I didn’t choose them. ヽ(´ー` )
The Hunt is a vastly superior film, no doubt. Super bleak, sure, but much better pacing, acting and narrative arcs. Plus, Mads. You’re gonna have to do a lot to be better than Mads. Sorry not sorry. ╮( ˘ 、 ˘ )╭
